One of the most talented players ever
to don the Hoops was Patsy Gallagher/Gallacher. Known as, “The Mighty Atom,” he
would go down in history for what is arguably the most remarkable goal ever
scored in a Scottish Cup Final ... the, so-called, “Patsy Gallagher Final” of
1925.
Picking the ball up from a free kick
well into the second half and with Celtic one down, Patsy set off on a mazy
dribble, skipping past challenge after robust challenge, sometimes barely
keeping his feet. Reaching the six-yard box, it looked like he would finally be
thwarted, after being crudely chopped down.
However, craftily clasping the ball
between his feet, the wee genius sprang up and hurled himself into a somersault
past heroic goalkeeper Britton into the Dundee net, where he ended up entangled
in the rigging.
Jimmy McGrory’s last-gasp trademark
headed winner from a ‘Jean’ McFarlane cross has been cruelly rendered something
of a footnote in history by the legendary status of Patsy’s equaliser.
A truly remarkable goal from an
exceptional player and “Mighty” Celtic icon.
