Controversy is the lifeblood of sport in general and football in particular.
In Scottish football circles, there is an important distinction to be drawn between an honest mistake and an “Honest Mistake”. The former is exactly what it says on the tin, the latter is a euphemism for official cheating.
Despite all the clichéd and statistically-challenged drivel about dodgy decisions evening out in the long run - and allowing for an admitted degree of (justifiable) ‘Timmy Paranoia’ - any neutral observer would surely concede that Celtic suffer disproportionately from the perverse ”Honest Mistake”.
The 1989 Scottish Cup Final turned on an example of an innocent honest mistake - that of the referee not spotting Roy Aitken’s opportunistic quick throw-in (depicted on this Tee) that should have gone the other way.
However, were it not for Terry Butcher’s subsequent feeble attempt at a headed clearance, further compounded by Gary Stevens’ fankled ‘interception’, Joe Miller would never have been able to nip in for the Cup-winner.
Those are the honest facts!
