Enrico “Tarzan” Annoni was a bit of an enigma in the Hoops. Acquired from Roma in Tommy Burns’s final season as manager, his mission was to add some much-needed steel to the Celtic back line for the urgent need to halt the Govan juggernaut that was stalking Celtic at the time.
On his day, Annoni could be heroic - but he also had in his locker that “Bombscare” tendency that haunted many defensive Celts before him and since. It was that heart-stopping tendency that gave birth to the classic tongue-in-cheek slogan on this Tee.
“Aw naw no annoni oan anaw noo!”
Failing to prevent the overhaul of our proud 9IAR that season, Annoni became very much a squad player the following crucial season, in which Marc Rieper and Alan Stubbs were the defensive fulcrum in the quest to stop the dreaded ‘10’.
However, “Tarzan” was selected for the vital role of subduing Ibrox poster boy, Brian Laudrup, in the key New Year Glasgow derby of January 1998. He completely snuffed out Laudrup’s considerable threat, to set up the 2-0 Celtic victory that proved to be the launch pad for a cathartic last-day title win.
Fittingly after that epic display, Enrico deputised at left back for the injured Stephane Mahe in the last six matches of that historic campaign, taking his place joyously in the on-field celebrations following the clinching 2-0 Celtic Park win over St Johnstone.
The slogan on Annoni’s post-match T-shirt that day was much more flattering and has since entered Celtic folklore.
