The awesome and enduring power of the Lisbon Lions squad lay, first and foremost, in its musketeer mentality. It was a company of men who knew each other’s worth, trusted each other implicitly and was prepared, metaphorically, to die together in the football trenches.
“One for all and all for one!“
It’s not that there were no stars in their ranks. Indeed, there was a smattering of spectacular talent ... genius even ... of a degree seldom seen in the Hoops, or any other shirt, for that matter - but there was no star complex. No ‘Prima Donna’. No selfish ego. Just a collection of gifted individuals, assembled at the right place and time - and who, under the guidance of a football visionary, changed the game forever and for the better.
All that said, there was one among them who was the undoubted, unquestioned, unchallenged leader, both on an off the park. One who, by his bearing, presence and example, symbolised all that was great and noble about that, the most celebrated Celtic squad of all time.
No name, no pack drill. Everyone knew and knows the leader of that marauding pride.
By his deeds, by his number ... and henceforth by this striking emblem ... be he now forever known.
