Billy McNeill wore the number five for Celtic for nearly two decades. He captained the Lisbon Lions to the European Cup in 1967, won nine league titles in a row, and remained, until his death, the central figure in modern Celtic history.
The design is a play. McNeill was Cesar to the supporters who watched him. He was the Main Man of the Lions. And so the number five on the design is drawn as a lion's head.
A coded tribute. The shape of the number tells you who. The Mane Man, for the captain whose teams were the Lisbon Lions.
